A group of Trailblazer for Recycling and Clean Energy (TRaCE) researchers from the University of Newcastle has just returned from a week in Singapore to explore ways their research capabilities could support the region’s transition to a low-carbon future.
Pierre Gouhier, Director of TRaCE at the University of Newcastle, also made the journey with several University of Newcastle representatives to meet with key industry leaders and envisage new pathways for collaboration.
We presented our innovative solutions in two exciting events that brought together industry, innovators, and policymakers committed to tackling the Asia-Pacific’s most pressing energy and environmental challenges.

Joint Energy Symposium – 3 September 2025
Co-hosted by TRaCE, the University of Newcastle’s Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER), and Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), the Join Energy Symposium marked a new chapter in the long-standing collaboration between the University and A*STAR.
Researchers exchanged ideas, showcased cutting-edge research, and established enduring partnerships in renewable and clean energy technologies.
Clean Energy Symposium: Accelerating the transition to a low carbon future – 4 September 2025
The University of Newcastle’s Singapore campus, called the Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education, has been dedicated to delivering the University’s programs in the region since 2002.
As part of 60 years of excellence at the University, the Institute’s Centre for Sustainable Development partnered with the National University of Singapore’s Centre for Hydrogen Innovations to host the Clean Energy Symposium.
TRaCE representatives Dr Jessica Allen and Pierre Gouhier led two expert panels focused on important research themes for the new energy economy:

The Clean Fuels session explored technologies with the potential to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors.

Powering Our Energy Future investigated pathways to modernise electricity systems, integrate renewable energy at scale, and leverage digitalisation to build a more flexible, reliable, and sustainable power sector.
This visit reaffirmed our commitment to delivering impactful education and research that fast-tracks net zero. We look forward to seeing the partnerships that emerge from the trip, and how our collaborative efforts will shape the future of energy across the Asia-Pacific region.
