Future Leader Lab: Empowering tomorrow’s sustainability leaders
As industries grapple with the complexities of achieving sustainability goals, there is a growing demand for leaders who can integrate innovative practices, circular economy models, and green technologies into their operations. At the heart of this shift, Trailblazer for Recycling and Clean Energy (TRaCE) offers various courses that allow professionals to gain critical skills to lead the net zero transition.
The Future Leader Lab course has been pedagogically upgraded by Sandeep Kirpalani (Academic Lead, TRaCE UNSW), in collaboration with Eitan Bienstock from UNSW Employability, to provide students with various experiences of leadership skills, including technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship and address the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals with a particular focus on SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities.
A unique learning experience
The course took an interdisciplinary approach, where learners explored sustainability challenges and solutions through both theoretical frameworks, design thinking and hands-on experiences on and off campus.
Students explored key concepts like circular economies, life cycle assessments, and sustainable city models while also gaining insights into the transformative role of AI in enabling sustainable solutions. One student, Leopold Freundorfer, noted, “A particular strength of the course was its in-depth examination of the Circular Economy, which not only deepened my knowledge of this topic but also revealed the potential for innovative solutions to emerge from reframing traditional problems.”
Field trips and engagements with industry experts such as KPMG and the Greenhouse Tech Hub enhanced the practical learning experience. The students had a day trip to Shoalhaven City Council’s recycling and waste depot, where they witnessed firsthand how innovative waste management techniques are applied, thereby gaining a deeper understanding of how circular economies function in real-world settings.
“I enjoyed that we got to hear from different aspects and perspectives such as corporate, startup, and governmental backgrounds to understand the broader context of sustainable development.” – student Nathan Sriwichian.
The course brought together students from various backgrounds, fostering a collaborative and diverse learning environment. It included students from India, China, Thailand, Malaysia, the USA, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark and Norway with mixed degrees including engineering, science, commerce and the humanities and undergraduate graduate and post levels.
“I met a range of students, staff, and visitors from around the world, which helped me challenge my own understanding of a sustainable future,” said student Lily Smart.

At the end of the course, students worked in groups to pitch sustainable solutions they had developed, applying their knowledge to real-world challenges. These presentations not only showcased their innovation but also honed their communication and presentation skills, which are essential components of effective leadership.
