Industry secondments

Skills & knowledge transfer between industry and academia

Skills & knowledge transfer between industry and academia

Established to accelerate an R&D project and ensure it has a commercial lens pathway built in from the very beginning, TRaCE industry secondments enable a two-way exchange between UNSW and University of Newcastle staff and TRaCE industry partners so that:

  • research team members or staff with specialist expertise are incentivised to immerse themselves within industry settings.
  • industry partners have the opportunity to collaborate onsite at either university.

The aim is to support the progression of research translation in a company setting (whether start-up or established industry) and to enable industrial researchers to embed themselves within a university laboratory or facility – in both instances, collaborating to fast-track the progression of an R&D project.

Through regular exchanges, the longer-term aim is to deepen knowledge transfer, build longer-term partnerships and develop enduring personal, scientific, and commercial links between the two universities and industry partners.

A University research engineer is seconded into an industry partner for the purpose of gaining a deeper understanding of customer needs and to be able to integrate this knowledge into product development. This could involve the research engineer joining a business development executive on customer visits and participating in a roadshow together.

With these insights, the research engineer will be better equipped to develop technology that addresses customer needs and a product the market is willing to pay for.
